Research Tips

Do you have to write a report, or a senior project? Here are some tips to help you get find the information you need.

1) Check the encyclopedia. The encyclopedia is a good starting point and will give you a lot of general information about your topic. It can even show you a new direction to write about. We have many sets of encyclopedias in the library including a set that you can take out! If the library is closed, you can go to POWER Library on our website and use the Funk and Wagnalls encyclopedia from home by entering your library card number. You can also check out Encarta encyclopedia and the Britannica encyclopedia.

2) After you have some background information for your paper, check out some of the library's books on your subject. You can check the online catalog here. If you need help with the catalog click here. If you can't get to the library you can read books online from home through NetLibrary . You can access NetLibrary through POWER Library.

3) Now that you have some background for your research, find out some of the new research the books might be missing. To do this check out magazines, newspapers and journal articles. We have some of the more recent magazines and newspapers in the library, along with computer CD's of the Observer-Reporter archives beginning in May 2002. Many of these sources will have some information online, but you can access EBSCO Host to do a much more complete magazine and newspaper search. You can access EBSCO Host here . 4) Some of the most up to date information will not be listed on any print resource (except newspapers). To get this information you can do a Google search. Before you use any information found on the web ask yourself where the information is coming from. It does not have to be accurate to be online. This website will help you to decide what is a good website.

Still need more information? You can also gather information through Grolier Online. To get into Grolier Online you will first go the Greene County Library System website. Click on the Grolier Online link along the right hand side. Next enter your barcode with a 724 in front of it. From there you can search the encyclopedia, magazine and website database!
